Pressing issues like climate change are bringing our economic practices into sharp focus – as an industry we are under increasing pressure to operate and grow in a sustainable manner.
Transport in NZ
A reality check
Transport in NZ
A reality check
Our transport infrastructure is running at high capacity as New Zealand’s economy grows - kiwis are hungry for goods from around the world, and our ability to make and sell products overseas is only increasing.
Our roads are full of trucks moving these goods around New Zealand.
At the same time, we are all becoming more aware of the
consequences of unfettered growth, the implications of sustainable resource use, and the impacts of fossil fuel consumption.
As a transport company, CEL is leading the way in embedding sustainable business practices in many ways - enabling their customers to achieve their economic goals while meeting increasing expectations around the sustainable transport of those goods.

Winning Awards for Sustainability
CEL are the trucking partner of Port Nelson in QuayConnect - a business that is well on the way to transforming the way we import and export goods.
QuayConnect identified a number of inefficiencies in wine industry logistics. Given the increasing importance of sustainable practices for wine consumers, the industry was well placed to benefit from a less fragmented distribution alternative.
By increasing per truck pallet loads, massively boosting port-side storage facilities, and securing key inwards goods contracts QuayConnect were able to guarantee a logistics solution that substantially reduces truck movements, road hours, fuel consumption, and carbon outputs while carrying the greater quantities of haulage and simultaneously reducing per unit costs.
It’s a win-win model that’s redefining what it takes to make and move our high value kiwi wines to market.
CEL is celebrating for the second time this year after innovative wine logistics service, QuayConnect won another national award.
In June, QuayConnect won the coveted Resilience to Climate Change category in the national 2017 Green Ribbon Awards.
QuayConnect was also a finalist in this year’s 2017 Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards, impressing the judges.

The Volvo Story
Environmental:
Volvo’s has a long track record of meeting environmental expectations. Their commitment to energy efficiency, fuel management, alternative fuels and materials and recycling means we are confident we are driving the most environmentally responsible trucks available on New Zealand roads.
Production plants in Europe are the first climate neutral vehicle factories in the world, and Volvo offers constant support, like onboard diagnostic monitoring, to ensure we are able to constantly improve our environmental performance.
Quality and performance:
We believe Volvo trucks are the best made truck on the market. Their superior construction and long term reliability gives us a safe and stable fleet with favourably low ownership costs.
Our drivers love driving them, enhancing safety and the road usership experience, and our maintenance programme ensures our trucks are
consistently running at peak performance to minimise our environmental footprint.
All our truck diagnostics are monitored in real-time - allowing us to continually optimise truck performance, guaranteeing our fleet performs in line with our rigorous sustainability standards.
Safety:
Volvo are leaders in traffic safety – their vision: no truck is to be involved in an accident. Given research shows human error is a contributory factor in 90% of accidents, Volvo design their trucks to help drivers take safety to the highest level.
Features like energy-absorbing cabs, front under-run protection system, adaptive cruise control and stretch breaking all work to maximise safety outcomes. Specific driver support features also include electronic stability control, all round visibility, iShift intelligent transmission and low noise systems ensure the driver is in a great place to make safe decisions.
